Die Abbildung zeigt das Porträt eines jungen Mannes von Tizian (um 1511). Die Annahme, dass es sich um den Dichter Ludovico Ariosto handelt, ist heute umstritten. Der Mann sitzt nach rechts gewendet und dreht seinem Kopf dem Betrachter zu, sodass seine Augen den Betrachter ansehen. Er trägt einen Bart und längere Haare. Er sitzt hinter einer halbhohen Mauer, auf die er den Arm stützt. Der Arm steckt in einem weiten Ärmel. Über seiner linken (der hinteren) Schulter hängt ein Umhang.
Ludovico Ariosto war Verfasser des Versepos "Orlando Furioso", das als Textquelle für Georg Friedrich Händels Opern "Alcina", "Ariodante" und "Orlando" diente.
