Das Porträt zeigt König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. von Preußen (1795-1861) in dunkler Uniform mit Ornat, Schärpe und verschiedenen Orden. Er veranlasste 1843 die bauliche Wiederherstellung des alten Letzlinger Jagdschlosses. Auf den Letzlinger Hofjagden fand Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Entspannung und die Möglichkeit zu politischen Gesprächen mit hohen Amtsträgern des preußischen Staates. Der Maler Franz Krüger (1797-1857) gilt als ein bedeutender Porträtist der Biedermeierzeit.
