Kurt Schwitters war einer der einflussreichsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts, der den deutschen Dadaismus, Surrealismus und Konstruktivismus aktiv mitentwickelte. El Lissitzky porträtierte ihn in einer Fotomontage ähnlich wie sein Selbstporträt "Konstrukteur. Selbstporträt mit Zirkel". Im Hintergrund zeigen sich drei Buchstaben von Schwitters Hauptwerk "MERZ". Dies war seine Bezeichnung für eine Collagentechnik aus Zeitungs- und Reklameresten.
