Michiel Carree gehörte zu einer niederländischen Malerfamilie, die über viele Generationen vom 17. bis ins 19.Jahrhundert in Den Haag und Amsterdam tätig war. Als Tier- und Landschaftsmaler stand Carree von 1697 an als Hofmaler in Berlin bei Friedrich I. von Preußen bis zum Tod des Königs im Jahr 1713 in Diensten. Idealisierte anmutige Landschaften mit Weidevieh gehörten zu seinen bevorzugten Sujets.
