Ab 1903 hielt sich Albert Weisgerber häufig in seiner Geburtsstadt St. Ingbert auf. Es entstanden Gemälde, in denen er sich mit dem französischen Impressionismus auseinandersetzte. Die Natur wurde dabei als farbige Erscheinung festgehalten. Freilichtmalerei war die Voraussetzung dafür, dass das Farbenspiel unter der natürlichen Beleuchtung eingefangen werden konnte. Die Schnitterin ist eines dieser Bilder.
