Karlshafen mit seinem Weserhafen wurde als Exulantenstadt für die Ansiedlung von Hugenotten 1699 von Landgraf Karl von Hessen-Kassel zwischen dem Solling im Norden und dem Reinhardswald im Süden am hessisch-niedersächsisch-nordrhein-westfälischen Dreiländereck gegründet. Seit 1977 trägt es den Namen "Bad Karlshafen".
