Zu sehen ist das Forum Romanum von Westen aus mit dem Colosseum am Horizont. Die Fotografie dokumentiert den archäologischen Zustand aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und ist selbst Zeugnis des Beginns der Fotografie als neues Bildmedium. Der Engländer James Anderson (1813-187) gehört mit dem von ihm praktizierten nassen Kollodiumverfahren zu den Pionieren der Fototechnik.
