Der Stich von Christian Gottlieb Geyser geht auf das 1772 von Johann Heinrich Tischbein d.Ä. (1722-1789) gemalte Porträt zurück. Die Graphik zeigt den Altertumswissenschaftler im Oval, das oben von einer Girlande bekrönt wird, unten befindet sich die Namenstafel. Christian Gottlob Heyne (1729-1812) aus Chemnitz stammte wie Winckelmann aus einfachen Verhältnissen. Auch ihm gelang eine wissenschaftliche Karriere, doch anders als Winckelmann führte diese bei ihm zu akademischen Weihen: Heyne wurde Professor der Rhetorik und Poesie an der Universität Göttingen und hielt dort erste archäologische Vorlesungen. Heyne gehört zu den frühen Kritikern Winckelmanns. Nichtdestotrotz standen beide Altertumswissenschaftler miteinander in Briefkontakt. Bezeichnet: CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB HEYNE. u.l.: I. H.
