Die Radierung zeigt den Petersplatz mit dem Petersdom im Hintergrund, den Kolonnaden von Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) rechts und dem Vatikanischen Obelisken in der Mitte des Platzes. Der Blickpunkt des Betrachters ist leicht nach links versetzt. Pietro Ruga fertigte diese Radierung nach einer Vorlage von Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). Sie erschien in einer Sammlung von römischen Veduten, die unter dem Titel "Nuova raccolta di 25. vedute antiche e moderne di Roma e sue vicinanze" erschien un von Niccola de Antoni im Jahr 1800 in Rom herausgegeben wurde.
